why are tungsten carbide rings $30-$50 vs. $300-$700 at jewelers?

Will asked:

I was browsing through engagement rings with the GF and I was looking at the mens wedding bands at a jeweler in the mall and I really liked the tungsten carbide rings they had for sale which were going for 300 to 700 bucks.

I go on ebay and I find the same styles of rings for 30 to 50 bucks. I would understand a 50 to 75 bucks cheaper online vs retailers, but Hundreds of dollars cheaper, what gives? are they fake, not well made?
If anyone has any input on this, let me know.

They might be fake- there are a lot of scammers on sites like ebay. or the seller might have them in bulk which they can then sell for a cheaper price. Then again, it might be stolen goods. Rather stick to a jeweller.

At first my husband and I wondered about that too. We did a lot of research and decided to buy our tungsten wedding bands online at and here’s what we found out.

At the mall and jewelry stores, they need to pay for operation costs like running the jewelry store, employees, rent for the building, and all that overhead. This pushes the price tag over hundreds of dollars.

Websites on the internet don’t have to pay for all that so you get the same quality rings for a lower price.

Stay away from websites and ebay that sell tungsten carbide rings for less than $100 because those are most likely low quality rings made with cobalt and have less tungsten.

I agree with everything Jenn said, and must also add to look at where the rings are coming from. Buy from US based companies. People in other countries won’t care if you aren’t satisfied with the product and will say anything to sell you a piece of junk. If you aren’t sure about ANYTHING about the ring, including where it comes from, ASK!

Also, research the metal in particular, and ask questions to the seller to make sure what they tell you that you are buying is exactly what they’re selling you.

    Best wishes
